Dry Eye Disease (DED) occurs when there is inadequate tear volume or function, resulting in reduced lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye.
Symptoms often include:
- Itchy eyes
- Sore eyes
- Red eyes
- Burning sensation
- Intermittent blurred vision
- Foreign body sensation
- Paradoxically, even watery eyes
DED is a multi-factorial disease and just using an off-the-shelf eye drop is often not enough to manage the symptoms. This brochure is designed to outline aspects of your eyes that may be contributing to your DED, the available treatment to remedy each of them, and how they can be tailored to you.
DED can occur as part of the normal aging process, especially during menopause. It is a side effect of some medications, or due to environmental factors (particularly air conditioning/heating). It is also common with any autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis.
